Hungry Hippo Sub Shop
If you're anywhere near downtown Gainesville, TX, and you haven’t yet grabbed a bite from Hungry Hippo Sub Shop, you’re seriously missing out on one of the area’s most satisfying lunch spots. Tucked into 112 N Commerce St, this place has built a loyal following — and as someone who's spent years in the restaurant industry evaluating sandwich shops and quick eats, I get why the locals keep coming back.
Hungry Hippo is what you’d call a true mom-and-pop sub shop, with a focus on quality over flash. The space is small, the hours are tight — open only from late morning to mid-afternoon most days — but don’t let that fool you. Every item on the menu packs bold flavors and real craftsmanship. This isn’t your typical assembly-line sandwich chain.
Sub Sandwiches That Hit All the Right Notes
The first thing that sets Hungry Hippo apart is the bread. Fresh, soft, and perfectly toasted when needed — it’s the backbone of a great sandwich, and they nail it. From there, you’ve got your pick of generously layered cold cuts, melty cheeses, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and zesty house-made sauces. The Italian Sub is one of their top sellers for good reason — loaded with salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone, and that perfect vinegar bite. But even a simple turkey and Swiss gets elevated here, thanks to quality ingredients and smart balance.
Portions are generous without going overboard. Each bite feels intentional, and there's enough variety on the menu to keep things interesting without overwhelming the lunchtime crowd. If you're in town searching for best lunch in Gainesville TX, chances are you’ll stumble across a few mentions of Hungry Hippo — and with good reason.
Speed, Service, and a Side of Small-Town Charm
The service here is another win. It's fast, friendly, and personal — the staff knows many of their customers by name, and you never feel like just another order number. Even during a busy lunch rush, the team keeps things moving smoothly without sacrificing attention to detail. It’s that blend of local hospitality and efficient service that makes a difference, especially when you're on your lunch break and need something fast but satisfying.
Compared to larger sandwich chains, Hungry Hippo brings the kind of attention and flavor you just don’t get from national brands. There's no “cookie cutter” sub here — each one feels handmade, not manufactured. For locals and nearby workers looking for sandwich shops near me, this is exactly the kind of gem people hope to find but rarely do.
Limited Hours, Unlimited Flavor
One of the things that makes Hungry Hippo unique is its focused operating hours. Open from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and just a short window on Saturdays — it’s clear this place is designed to serve a high-quality, high-demand lunch crowd. The limited schedule keeps operations tight, which often results in better consistency and quality control. If you manage to drop by during those hours, you’re rewarded with something far better than your average midday meal.
There's a rotating special most days, so even if you're a regular, you’re not stuck ordering the same sandwich every time. I’ve tried their meatball sub on special once — saucy, cheesy, and filling without being too heavy — and it easily rivaled what you'd find at much more expensive delis.
Local Favorite for a Reason
Gainesville isn’t flooded with dining options, which makes places like Hungry Hippo all the more valuable. For residents or folks traveling through who Google things like Gainesville TX restaurants downtown, this place tends to pop up right alongside the town’s few sit-down eateries — and often ranks higher in terms of reviews and customer satisfaction.
That’s not by accident. The quality speaks for itself, and while it’s not a sit-down, full-service restaurant, it doesn’t need to be. The experience is built around excellent food, friendly service, and fair pricing — all the essentials done extremely well.
Whether you're a Gainesville local or just passing through around lunchtime, Hungry Hippo Sub Shop is a spot that gets straight to the point — no fluff, just really good sandwiches and a clear passion for feeding the community right.
Reviews
Awesome Old school Grinder shop. Pick your sub and tell them what you want on it. They make em fast and delicious.
I initially came to this sandwich shop because I had not yet found a restaurant/fast food place that serves pastrami sandwiches in Gainesville. Upon walking in, I was greeted warmly by a young woman and a middle-aged woman. They have several sandwich combinations to choose from, but you can also make your own sandwich if you wish. The sheer size of the bread they pulled out from under the counter caught me off guard... in a good way. I don't know if they buy their bread locally, but it was delicious. Good portion sizes, great quality ingredients, and decent prices. The shop is very humble on the inside, as far as decor is concerned. I would definitely recommend this shop to friends and family members over a local Subway. There is no comparison between the two.
Pretty good sandwiches! Fresh and unique. Nice to have local shops like this available!
Good! Huge sandwiches. Ordered roast beef and cheese and a Hungry Hippo, they were so good. Fresh bread, meats and cheese.
Grabbed lunch on our way through town. Was amazing! Called it in ahead and the girls were super friendly.
